Junior Match Reports

U11’s v Poynton Monday 26th June 2010

There was a good performance from our U11’s on Monday night away at Poynton. Our captain for the evening Travis Coulson won the toss and elected to field. Although our bowling was a little wayward at times it was well supported with some good fielding and ‘safe hands’. We managed to restrict the home side to 297 for the loss of an impressive nine wickets (nett 261). The pick of our bowling attack was Joe Clarke who finished with figures of 3 wickets for 3 runs. Also impressing on the night was Reece Currie who volunteered to be wicket keeper and did not disappoint with a very impressive display behind the stumps.
Our reply got off to a solid start with Travis Coulson (6), Jordan Brookes (14 n.o.) and Daniel Taylor (7) the pick of the scorers. Unfortunately we were unable to take advantage of the good start and although we only lost 6 wickets we fell 8 runs short of victory on 277 for 6 (nett 253).
Despite the result all the players should be proud of their performance in the first game of the season. If we continue to play with the same commitment and enthusiasm we are sure to do well in the games to come.
Moment of the Match – A sharp piece of fielding from Louis Grundy. A good stop, pick-up and through to wicket keeper Reece Currie who collected the ball cleanly and flicked of the bails leaving the Poynton batsman stranded. A great piece of cricket all round.
Man of the Match – Daniel Taylor. A good all round performance taking 2 wickets for 8 runs and scoring 7 with bat including a boundary. Well done Daniel. Keep it up.

WHAT A START.

When the initial fixtures were released I saw that we had been drawn in what is, without doubt, the strongest of the two Stockport zones and our opening two fixtures were against Cheadle and Hyde. Not the easiests of starts.

In our opening game, away to Cheadle, we put in a great team performance and won the game by an impressive 20 runs. Batting first we scored 165 for 4 and with a terrific bowling and fielding display, restricted Cheadle to 145 for 6. A great start. At the end of the game the Cheadle manager congratulated us on our win and commented that "we have an impressive group of lads who have a great team ethic".

Hyde next. Could we carry this great start on? Surely we couldn`t beat the all conquering U13`s Hyde team from last season! Don`t you believe it.

Hyde batted first and, although we had an early breakthrough with a run out in the first over, the score after 4 overs was 38 for 1 and it looked like we would be facing a daunting target. James and Cameron tightened up the bowling and after 9 overs Hyde had only moved onto 49 and had lost 3 more wickets, 2 for Cam and 1 for James.
Who to turn to next? What an inspired decision by James to bowl Dylan and Andrew together. Although Dylan did not get a wicket he only went for 18 runs of his 5 overs and Andrew, bowling for the first time this season (but definately not the last) returned figures of 2 for 12 of 5 overs.
Despite being 6 down Hyde are a very strong team and had some good players to come and the dangerous Ben Turner was still at the crease. Who to bring on now? Is Jake upto it? There was never a doubt! What can I say about Jake other than to state his figures, 2.3 overs, 2 maidens, 1 run, 4 wickets. What a performance.
Hyde AO for 82 in 23.3 overs, half the job done but could we finish it off.
In the absence of Ryan our latest recruit, Tom Dunning volunteered to open the batting but was unfortunately caught after hitting an impressive 4. I am sure that Tom will prove to be a valued member of our squad and will strengthen our already formidable batting line up in the games to come.
What followed nextI don`t recall ever having seen before from a junior player in any of my many teams and, I hope I am wrong, but doubt that I will ever see again. Dylans innings of 45 retired was absolutely awsome and included 4 4`s and 4 6`s putting us in a winning position when he finally had to retire.
This innings was superbly supported by a fine display from Aaron McR who has volunteered to open for us as Will Hayes has gone to hyde. Aaron opened his account with 19 against Cheadle and scored an impressive 25no in this game, hitting the winnings runs.
I know that I have singled out a number of individual performances here but I must emphasise that this is team game and that everyone of our lads played their part in these two great wins which see us top of the league having played one game less than almost all the other teams involved.
A great start and our squad will continue to get stronger when we see the return of Ryan Murphy and Ryan Usher who I understand is now getting close to recovering from his injury.

Well done lads and I sure that there is much more to come.

On a final note can I just say that there is absoltely no truth in the rumour that I am about to resign as some are claiming that "the team perform much better when I am away". Anyone I hear spouting this treasonable nonsense will, of course, be shot at dawn!!!!

Joe
